A Tight Round-up

31 Aug

Cool weather approaches!  Your feet might get cold!  Pull out that box of last-year’s tights, friend!  Take a look at what you have, sort through all those socks and tights, toss old gross things with holes and runs, tidy up those that remain.  Make a list of what you need for the coming fall season; perhaps you need some colorful socks to wear with transitional platform-sandals?  Or possibly some shockingly RED tights to wear with all of your ‘basic black’ outfits? Maybe you want to start wearing thigh-highs underneath your vintage secretary dresses?

Sunday in Bed

28 Aug

Here we are on another rainy day.  I’m lucky in that Hurricane Irene slowed her fury down by the time she arrived in my backyard.  Lots of wind and a bit of rain, but we’re no worse for the wear, thank goodness.  I’m reading reports of major flooding, houses washing away, and it strikes me that writing about lingerie isn’t the best use of compassion, but I am, if nothing else, a seeker of comfort when terrible things happen.

When it’s dreary and rainy outside, my favorite thing to do is lay in bed with a good book, wearing as little as possible, for maximum comfort. Today I’m huddled under the covers in knee-high socks (my legs get cold!), a pair of skimpy silk tap-pants, and a silk bra. When it’s time for jaunts to the kitchen for refills of tea and plates of banana bread, I throw on a black silk robe.

Sunday in Bed

On a happier note, after I’m done with a Sunday full of EPIC relaxation, I’m embarking on a two-week vacation from work, wherein I hope to accomplish many things which have been languishing on my to-do list. Not least of all, getting back on track with this lovely blog.  I have let far too much time go by without updates, and that makes me sad!  I have some new features planned, which I hope you’ll just love!

In the meantime, my Mister just brought in a fresh peach from the backyard, which I can’t wait to bite into! So, it’s back to bed for me now; my book and the Mister are calling my name!

Happy Sunday my darlings.

Grand Salon Madame

27 Aug

On this rainy afternoon, I’m occupied with reading about the great intellectual women of the 17th and 18th centuries; women with socially progressive ideals, hosting in their homes, gatherings of men who would come to share knowledge and the manners of society with each other.

As I read, for some reason I imagine everyone in their knickers. The garments of the day were so full of bustles, intricate corsets and cages, petticoats and undershirts, garters and stockings. I keep picturing a bordello-salon of sorts, one where the women lounge about in exotic robes and stockings, and the men are down to their trousers and socks (and perhaps suspenders brushed from shoulders in great haste, only to hang loose from their hips). Conversations branch from the science of the day to progressing rights for women, medical advances, human theory, and musical enlightenment. Women serve the wit, men serve the banter. Champagne may be involved! Perhaps a bit of light flirting! A nuzzle of teeth on ears behind some secretive curtain. “Oo la la, mon cherie!”

The Women of the French Salons is captivating, and can be read for free on Gutenberg. This exceprt in particular was particularly inspiring:

“Imagine a society composed of a leisure class with more or less intellectual tastes; men eminent in science and letters; men less eminent, whose success depended largely upon their social gifts, and clever women supremely versed in the art of pleasing, who were the intelligent complements of these men; add a universal talent for conversation, a genius for the amenities of social life, habits of daily intercourse, and manners formed upon an ideal of generosity, amiability, loyalty, and urbanity; consider, also, the fact that the journals and the magazines, which are so conspicuous a feature of modern life, were practically unknown; that the salons were centers in which the affairs of the world were discussed, its passing events noted—and the power of these salons may be to some extent comprehended.”

~ Amelia Gere Mason, ‘The Women of the French Salons’,Chapter VII. Salons in the Eighteenth Century

I’m off to do my own brand of lounging about, with a side of intellectual banter to stimulate my brain! Oh, champagne may be involved, and there will definitely be some flirting! Mrrow!
